Welcome back to Term 3

We had a fabulous start to the term! We were so lucky to have presenters from Genesis Energy.

They came in and taught so many exciting things about how energy is formed. We also had the opportunity to generate energy manually using the 'Human Generator'.

Some facts from the session were:

There are different ways of collecting energy.

Solar panels collect energy from the sun.

Water hydro dam gathers water from everywhere and put it through huge pipes. Starts of as potential energy and kinetic energy when it goes down the pipes

Wind energy - Mostly used in Wellington and Palmerston north areas as it is very windy. Wind turbines are used to collect energy.

Fossil fuel ise used. There are two main ones used in New Zealand. Natural gas is burnt to make energy and coal.

Geo-thermal electricity comes from under the ground. Extracts steam from the ground.

Here are some pictures from our session!
Emrico and Scarlet were lucky first to be selected to have a go with the Human Generator in the senior school

  1. Kia ora Feu'u Class 2019,
We really enjoyed reading all about your visit from Genesis Energy! We have a local business here called the Electric Village, which some of us visited last year and learned about energy. We really enjoyed learning about the wind turbines being in places like Palmerston North and Wellington... we also realised that we have three wind turbines just out of Gisborne, on the plains by the river. There must be enough wind there to power them. We would have loved to have seen your photos, especially if they showed something about the Human Generator, but unfortunately they're not showing. Maybe you could check that they have been inserted properly and we can check back next week? We're looking forward to seeing them.

    1. Kia ora Ruaumoko Class and Amie,
Thank you for your nice comment, we really appreciate your compliments. Some of us have been to Gisborne before, but never seen the wind turbines. Thanks for the information, if we are ever in Gisborne we would love to check them out! Sorry about the pictures going missing! We will get our teacher Ms Chand and Gerhard to fix them. We would love to stay in touch with you!

From all the learners in Feu'u Class (and Gerhard).

My favourite part was when they was 2 light bulb and the expensive one was easy to make it light up but the cheap one was hard to make it light up.This part reminded me when my light went off and i had to get another one and from that day on i never turn on my light when it is daytime. What does geothermal mean?
